AREAS OF EXPERTISE:

Materials science, turbulence, energy harvesting, hypersonic/supersonic vehicles, aerodynamics, nonequilibrium phenomena, high-performance computing

Head shot of Eva Zurek.

James Chen is an expert in materials science for energy harvesting (such as triboelectric and piezoelectric devices) and aerospace engineering for high-speed aerodynamics (including supersonic and hypersonic flights).

Chen is the founder and director of the Multiscale Computational Physics Lab (MCPL) at UB.

The lab performs theoretical analysis and high-performance computation to better understand flow physics behind supersonic and hypersonic flights. It also studies turbulence energy transfer at supersonic and hypersonic speeds for safer and quieter high-speed flights. The lab also demonstrated the origins of charge transfer behind contact and tribo-electrofication, which has been shown as a promising alternative for energy source for personal electronics.

Chen can speak to the media about the applications of his work, including space travel and the development of new energy sources.
